Malibu Elementary School

Fall 2018
Portable classrooms at Malibu Elementary SchoolWe are happy to welcome students, teachers, staff and parents to the new Malibu Elementary School. Many people labored all summer to get the campus ready to combine Juan Cabrillo Elementary School and Point Dume Marine Science School to form the new school on the site of Point Dume School.

To get the campus ready for school, eight portable buildings were installed: five classrooms, a kindergarten classroom, a new main offce, and a restroom building.

Work was completed to supply the new buildings with air conditioning, a new electrical supply, and fire alarms that are code compliant and include voice evacuation commands that can reduce fear and confusion in an emergency. The creation of a new driveway exit and the addition of new curbing and pavement were completed to improve drop off and pick up.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AT MALIBU ELEMENTARY

STILL TO COME: Restoration of the irrigation systems to areas impacted by construction is underway. Irrigation to the park is fully restored.
TREE SAVED: We are pleased that we were able to keep a healthy California native sycamore tree as part of the landscape near the portable classrooms.

Funds for these improvements came from Measure ES, the 2012 voter-approved bond.
An artificial turf area in the main yard now has a new swing set (above), and a shade structure was installed in the kinder yard.
One of the key features of the new campus will be improved security and safety. The new main office will allow visitors to check in prior to entering the campus. Parents and visitors will pass through the new Raptor visitor-man- agement system so we know who is visiting the campus. This system is in the process of installation and parents will be noti$#ed when system use will begin.

New fencing (right) will allow students to move throughout the campus within a secure perimeter. Earlier this year, we completed the installation of earthquake valves on natural-gas supply lines. These valves automatically shut off if a large enough seismic event is detected, reducing the risk of fire.
