SMMUSD Facility Improvements - Lincoln Middle School

Lincoln Middle School

Lincoln Middle School's brand new track and multiuse field is now open! Funding for the project was provided by voter-approved bond money. The new state-of-the-art facility features synthetic turf with environmentally-friendly cork infill, a new six-lane rubber track, the return of field lights and upgraded and enlarged restrooms that are accessible to all.

The cork infill utilized is environmentally friendly, non-toxic to ocean life, a renewable resource, and provides a cool, shock-absorbent playing surface. Studies have found fewer concussions and other sports-related injuries as well as shorter recovery times from injuries with cork infill turf.

Lincoln Middle School FieldLincoln Middle School Principal Florence Culpepper Richardson is pleased to share this new, safer field with students, families and the community, "The new cork-filled turf is safer for students and the track is much more inviting. The field upgrades were definitely needed for LMS and the community and I look forward to watching our students fully embrace the opportunity that this represents!"

Through the Master Facility Use Agreement with the City of Santa Monica, facilities such as the new track and field at Lincoln Middle School are available to more than 1,500 community members through a permit-approval system. The City of Santa Monica and SMMUSD recently updated the agreement that provides use of the school fields and facilities to the public. Principal Culpepper Richardson views the relationship with the community in this way, "Integrating our schools into the fabric of the greater community is key. We want our students to feel pride and ownership and we want community groups, nonprofits that offer after school services to our students and sports teams to feel welcome. Furthermore, we want these spaces to be fully accessible to all so ADA compliance is important in ensuring everyone can enjoy these facilities."

LMS Library

LMS 21st Century Learning
With the help of voter-approved bond money, SMMUSD was able to allocate funding for the demolition and construction remodel of our west wing building, located on the 14th Street side of campus. Built in 2015, it contains a 21st century-styled library, which includes wobble chairs as options for students who learn best while moving their bodies. The west wing building remodel also included a choral room, outdoor amphitheater, six classrooms, and two science labs. Part of the project included upgrading 20 existing classrooms to the district’s new technology standards.
LMS water savings

LMS water sustainability
In the new restrooms, 10 low-flush toilets were installed, each saving 31 percent per flush. In the boy’s restroom, five high-efficiency urinals are saving 87 percent of water per use. Future sustainability plans include replacing 43 more toilets with low-flush units. Two new bottle-filling stations were added by the track and field giving students access to fresh water to refill their reusable sports bottles.

LMS sustainable field lighting

LMS sustainable energy
SMMUSD is dedicated to creating a successful learning environment for students through sustainable initiatives. Part of this effort has included the installation of new Musco field lighting. This lighting is more energy efficient and creates less glare for the surrounding properties while providing our students and community members with a safer experience on the playing field. Lincoln previously had field lights that were out of use for 25 years.
LMS accessibility

LMS Accessibility
Equality is of the utmost importance to us, which is why the new bathrooms at Lincoln Middle School’s track and field are ADA-approved for accessibility. The major components in ensuring that the bathrooms were ADA-compliant was creating ease of access as well as ease of use. From the doors to the sinks and toilets, each aspect is designed and built to ADA standards.
