Educational Specifications

Guiding how we plan, build, and equip our schools for future learning

ABOUT EDUCATIONAL SPECIFICATIONS
What are educational specifications? Simply put, they are planning documents that specify physical requirements of learning environments aligned with the goal that all students graduate ready for college and careers from schools that are safe, socially responsive and academically rigorous.

The specifications are guided to the answers to questions like:
  • How will students be learning in the future? We already know much more learning will be project-based as opposed to lecture-based.
  • What kinds of physical space is needed? For instance, classrooms that can be reconfigured tend to be larger than current classrooms with rows of desks.
  • How will students be equipped? For instance, will they need more storage space for in-progress projects?
During the fall of 2018 and early winter 2019, SMMUSD sought feedback from students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members. The district is now finalizing the specifications based on that feedback.

Focusing ideas, integrating partnerships, and producing a better place to learn!
