A partnership was established between the Santa Monica Malibu School District and the City of Santa Monica to redevelop the cultural, recreational and public realm areas of the Santa Monica High School (Samohi) campus for use by Samohi during school hours and by the community, under management of the City, during non-school hours.
The goal of the CCJUP is to provide and enhance the Samohi campus with new facilities and improve the opportunities for cultural and recreational activities for the City of Santa Monica. The Samohi campus and the existing programs will be maintained or upgraded with no permanent loss to the school.
The City of Santa Monica Redevelopment Agency has allocated $56 million to the project; which consists of construction improvements and allocations for planning, design services, entitlements and project management.
The CCJUP includes the removal and demolition of an older gym facility and replacing it with a new gym facility. The new gym will contain new basketball/volleyball courts, dance and yoga rooms, pep studio and a variety of shared support amenities such as additional restrooms, showers, dressing areas and spectator accommodations. A synthetic turf athletic field has replaced the former grass athletic field.
Additional improvements include new support facilities to increase and expand the opportunities for more cultural activities such as outdoor live performances. This upgrade will provide facilities for the Greek theatre stage including shared restrooms, dressing rooms, props/equipment storage, stage lighting/audio enhancements and new areas for logistical and back stage preparations.
In July 2011, the Samohi athletic field went under construction. As part of the CCJUP, the grass field was replaced with a synthetic turf athletic field. Construction of the field completed in October 2011. The grand opening and ribbon cutting event was held on October 27, 2011. Beginning October 29, 2011, the City of Santa Monica, during non-school hours, began to manage the use of the field, track and tennis courts. These facilities will be open for community use during non-school hours.
